Magazine Advertisement

Shown below is my final magazine advert that I have created in conjunction with my music video and album digipak for the song Pretty Hurts. I have researched into existing magazine adverts to understand and follow the codes and conventions in my own.

Firstly, the background image for my magazine advert replicates the images shown in the chorus of my music video - an example shown to the right. Following through the same imagery throughout all products is an example of synergy and helps make the advert more recognisable for the audience.

To follow the codes and conventions I have also included the album cover, supplier, artist information, song titles and an album review. These are just some of the features that I found on the existing adverts that I studied. This makes the magazine advert more authentic as it is what real music adverts would include.

Finally, I have used a loose-script font to mirror the text that I used on my album cover. This helps the products to flow and acts as synergy. I have also used a light pink block behind the first letters of the album title to make the title stand out, just as a real magazine advert would have a standout title. The light pink is also a theme followed by Beyonce in her music products and therefore is an effort to acknowledge that.

Creative Journey: October-January Diary

Daily Diary of Production:

15.10.16 - I have created a production schedule to try and ensure that my filming and editing is filmed and completed to certain deadlines. This is a rough schedule as other commitments such as employment and exams could affect whether the deadlines are met. I plan to have my whole production completed by the end of January and the final production schedule can be found on a separate post.

29.10.16 - This was the proposed date to begin filming for my music video, however the actor which I had planned to film with suffered an injury prior to filming day making us unable to film. This will affect the production schedule as I need to find a date to reschedule where both me and the actor are able to film. However, I still have a detailed plan of what I need to film and can expand on this further so the next date set should run smoothly.

26.11.16 - Due to delays as a result of my actor being injured and problems setting a date, today was the first day to begin filming. I have successfully managed to get all the footage for the first half of the music video, however because of the weather, outdoor scenes were unable to be filmed. This means that I am still behind the production schedule initially set.

15.12.16 - Due to commitment issues on both parts, me and my actor were unable to set another date to finish filming. As I am now significantly behind production schedule and need to meet deadlines, I have made the decision to begin the filming process again with a different actor. I plan to film all necessary footage over the coming weeks.

08.01.17 - With my new actor, I have finished collecting footage for all the indoor shots however just as previously, the weather has prevented us from getting the shots for scenes outdoors. We plan to get these over the next few days weather permitting. Below is a photo taken on set. As a result of having to film the footage twice with two different actors, I found that the second shoot was alot more successful and more productive. For example I found positioning the camera and ensuring shots were still a lot easier meaning the second set of footage was more successful.

09.01.17 - I have began to cut together the footage I have so far using the software iMovie as it is free and the easiest to use. The screenshot below shows the beginning of the basic edit, however I plan to transfer the footage onto adobe premier in order to use after effects to enhance the shots.

23.01.17 - I have reached another obstacle in my film development as a large amount of the footage filmed has been lost between filming and transferring the footage onto my computer. I plan to re-film footage at the end of the week however means that I have fell further behind on my production schedule.

10.02.17 - I now have all the footage for my music video and can continue the editing process. This will have to be done over half term as I am away for the next week, however I should be able to complete this by the end of the month in time of the deadline.

27.02.17 - My final production for my A2 Media coursework as well as my print products are now complete. I am not completely happy with the final outcomes as I believe that my music video could have been executed to a higher standard but I have ran out of time to improve and create a second draft.

Magazine Advert Deconstructions

Below are three magazine advert deconstructions from artists similar to Beyonce - the original artist for my music video. All three have different approaches and use and challenge different conventions, outlined below.

Magazine Advert Deconstruction

Shown above is the magazine advert used for the promotion of Beyonce's third album 'I am... Sasha Fierce.' My first impressions of the advert is that it is clever and effective in portraying the artist brand and able to appeal to a wide audience.

Firstly the advert both follows and challenges the codes and conventions of stereo-typical music advertisements. One way that it follows the conventions is by having striking images acting as a wallpaper for the advert, covering the entirety. This allows text and any other component to be layered over it but with the advert still being eye-catching. The text is also clear and easy to read with the words 'The Album Out Now' the most prominent feature in the centre. This is where the audience' eyes are initially drawn to, making the purpose of the advert - to promote her new album - to be instantly known.

However, an element of the advert which breaks the conventions is that she doesn't have the full title of the album or the album artwork anywhere on the ad.  For the majority of music adverts this would be ineffective advertising as the audience would therefore not know what exactly is being advertised. However, Beyoncé as an artist and brand dominates the music industry and the media allowing her to be able to break the conventions. If she releases a new album the world already knows its name and the album artwork is plastered everywhere in the media, therefore if an audience member enters a shop they will already know what they want and it will be at the front and more than likely in an easy-to-spot location.

As previously mentioned the background of the advert is striking images to engage with the audience. However, unlike normal music adverts which may only feature one image (usually the album artwork or related to the album image), this advert is split into two contrasting images, not related to the album artwork itself. The image on the left is soft, with a natural image of Beyoncé and with muted colours. The opposing image, is a strong, defined image of Beyoncé stood posed in a metallic outfit. I believe this is a representation of the well-known alter-ego "Sasha Fierce," a prominent theme in this particular album. The image on the left is representing Beyoncé Knowles, the person, the sister, the wife and the mother, on the right is Sasha Fierce, the independent performer and public persona.

The images are also used as a significant marketing ploy in order to attract a wider audience than the young female audience, stereotyped from Destiny's Child and her earlier albums. This is something that Beyoncé has tried to do consistently through the transition of her brand and music over the years. (This is a theme mentioned in more detail in my post titled Beyoncé brand or artist?) The softer image is what would be associated with slower songs, perhaps ballads or emotion - songs on the album which would stereotypically attract a female, more mature, and higher social grade audience. On the contrary the strong image would be associated with the powerful songs, perhaps more R&B or upbeat. This would more likely attract a younger audience, males, and a lower social grade. Thus through the use of both images it insinuates that whoever views the advert, there is something included that would appeal to them.

Alongside analysing the Beyoncé album advert I researched into other adverts used by similar female artist to help inspire me in creating mine. One that particularly stood out to me as opposing the Beyonce one is Jessie J's debut album advert.  Unlike the Beyonce advert, Jessie J does use the image from her album artwork as the background image to her poster advertisement. This is more than likely because it is her debut album and the aim is to get her name known, therefore using the same image across all platforms makes it more recognisable. This is something that I may have to do with my album artwork as its a new artist and new song and therefore using the same image helps the audience to associate the advert with potentially buying the album.
Secondly, unlike Beyonce's this advert features lots of text to make the purpose of the advert easily known and has the artist name and album name the two most prominent features. The text is also set on a white background making it legible so the audience are more likely to take notice, it does however make it more formal and less eye-catching but its necessary for new artists to do to increase sales. Finally both artists do follow the conventions of a typical album advert by including popular songs featured on the album and the artist info (e.g. website.) This is important as artists usually pre-release some songs as singles to get the songs known and in the charts before releasing the album so once released, if people like the singles they are likely to want to hear more and thus buy the album. This is a popular marketing strategy across new and old artists.

Digipak Initial Ideas

Before even beginning the process of designing my album cover, I had an initial idea in my head of how I wanted the final product to look. I pictured a simple cover, featuring my artist however I did not want it to be close up.

For me the song Pretty Hurts relays a message of insecurity from the artist and I wanted this to be portrayed in my album cover. I therefore directed the photo on the right and chose this to be the base photo for my album artwork. I believe this photo shows the artist in reflection, perhaps thinking about the message of the song, thinking about how they feel about themselves or even looking out on the pressurized society we have created - this is an enigma. While the artist is still the focus of the photo, she is off-centered and distanced, making the overall photo softer and portraying the underlying emotion of the song. From this point, I began to add text and different filters and effects to create drafts to choose from for my final album cover.

Idea 1:

For my first idea I decided to make the song title the focus of the picture but combined a bold font with a pastel colour scheme to maintain the softness I wanted from the image. I placed the name of the artist at the bottom of the screen so it was still a prominent feature but not the main focus. I like this idea because it looks modern and is striking while also matching how I proposed to brand the artist and music video.

Idea 2:

My second idea for my album cover framed the initial image using a soft gray so the difference between the image and frame wasn't too harsh. I then used a standard, more formal font to add the song title and artist name either side of the image. I like this idea because it has a more mature and professional look but still captures the emotion of the artist through the image.

Idea 3:

For my third idea I decided to add a monochrome filter and just like the previous idea I framed the image, this time with a pure white. I also cropped the image into a standard square and centered it ensuring the frame surrounds the image completely. I then used a standard font to add the song title and artist name. I like this idea because even though the song is catchy and a 'pop' hit, the underlying message of it is important and I believe this album cover looks more mature, enabling the song to be taken more seriously. However, I do think that the picture loses its emotion with the filter and the overall cover is not as striking.

Idea 4:

For my final idea I added a translucent baby pink accent to the corner of the picture to contrast the colours of the image and make the whole cover look more modern. I think that this effect is striking and would target a younger audience. The font is also less formal, contributing to this idea. While I like the colour scheme how bold it looks I don't think it looks as professional as the other ideas, this perhaps undermines the message of the song.
